Dunajská Quarter: A Glimpse into Bratislava's Past

The Dunajská Quarter is celebrated for its hidden courtyards and elegant Art Nouveau architecture, which are often missed by visitors. These tranquil inner courtyards, or vnútrobloky, reflect the city's architectural development and offer a calm retreat from the city's busy pace. The neighborhood blends historical character with modern vibrancy, making it a unique part of Bratislava.

Historically, the area was known as Franz Joseph City (1848–1930), named after Emperor Franz Joseph I. As one of Bratislava’s original five districts, it lay between the Old Town and the Danube River. The district featured a picturesque fishing settlement, green meadows leading to the castle, and a statue of Maria Theresa. Though much has changed over time, the area still preserves its historical charm.

The Historic Building at Štúrova 10: A Secessionist Masterpiece

At the corner of Štúrova and Karadžičova streets stands a remarkable building that once housed the Tulipán Café. Constructed in 1903, this structure is a prime example of Viennese Art Nouveau architecture. Designed by architect Jozef Schiller, the building features distinctive curved balconies, intricate stucco work, and decorative motifs that reflect the artistic trends of the early 20th century.

The café, known for its elegant interior, was a popular gathering spot for the city's intellectuals and artists. In recent years, the building has been sensitively renovated and now operates as the Tulip House Boutique Hotel. The hotel preserves the architectural integrity of the original structure while offering modern amenities, providing guests with a unique blend of historical charm and contemporary comfort.
